Warren Shire Council is saddened to acknowledge the passing of long-serving former Councillor and respected local businessman Les Grindrod whose contribution to the Shire spanned many decades.

Mr Grindrod served the Warren Shire community as a Councillor for almost 11 years, from September 1980 to September 1991, including six years as Deputy Shire President.

Throughout his time on Council, Mr Grindrod contributed across a broad range of areas important to Warren Shire and the wider region. He represented Council on the Regional Tourism Committee, Orana Industrial Development Board and Gateway to the Outback Committee and served on Council's Tourism, Occupational Health and Safety, Policy and Resources, Town Facilities and Tender Committees.

His contribution to Warren Shire extended well beyond local government.

A well-known local businessman, Mr Grindrod owned and operated Grindrod's Newsagency, which has been in the same family since 1961. A familiar presence in Warren's main street for generations, he and his wife Yvonne have been an enduring part of the local community.

Les was also a passionate supporter of Warren's airport and aviation. A keen aviator himself, he undertook private charter work and was a long-time advocate for aviation and its importance to the district.

Mayor Greg Whiteley said Mr Grindrod would be remembered as someone who genuinely cared about Warren and wanted to see his hometown prosper.

“Les was always welcoming and friendly. A man with Warren at his heart. This was his home town and he loved seeing it do well.

“Whether through Council, his business, aviation or simply being part of the community, Les gave a great deal to Warren Shire over many years. He will be remembered with great respect and affection.”

Council extends its sincere condolences to Mr Grindrod's wife Yvonne, daughter Merryn and his wider family and friends.

Vale Les Grindrod. Thank you for your service to Warren Shire.
