Warren Shire Council Secures Funding for Local Careers and Boosts Tourism Opportunities - Post Image

Warren Shire Council is pleased to announce the successful securing of funding through the NSW Government's Fresh Start for Local Government Apprentices, Trainees, and Cadets Program. This funding will support two new positions: a Trainee Tourism Officer and an Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, providing valuable career opportunities for local residents and contributing to the region’s economy.

The funding arrives at an important time for Warren Shire, with Council’s recent tourism initiatives, including the launch of the Discover Warren NSW website and the Discover Warren Regional Tourism Brochure. These projects highlight the Shire’s natural attractions, such as the Macquarie Marshes, Tiger Bay Wetlands, and Warren Museum and Art Gallery, strengthening its position as a key regional destination.

Acting General Manager Stephen Glen is enthusiastic about the new trainee role and its potential to contribute to this growing sector: "Tourism is an incredibly dynamic industry, and Warren Shire has so much to offer. The Trainee Tourism Officer position is a fantastic opportunity for someone to join this exciting space, helping to attract visitors, promote our Shire, and contribute to the local economy. With the chance to earn a Certificate III in Tourism through Warren TAFE, this role also provides a strong foundation for a rewarding career in tourism, whether locally or further afield."

The Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Mechanic position is equally critical, ensuring the Shire’s fleet of essential vehicles and machinery operates smoothly. "Council’s fleet represents a wide range of machinery and vehicles that are critical in a rural and agricultural community like ours,” said Mr Glen.

“This apprenticeship offers the chance to learn from some of the most experienced staff in the industry, ensuring the apprentice gains not only technical skills but also real-world insights that set them up for a successful career," he said. "It’s an incredible opportunity to work on the frontlines of our operations and play a key role in keeping our Shire moving forward."

The funding builds on a successful pilot program conducted with Warren Central School and the Department of Education, which encouraged local students to consider careers in local government.

"The pilot program showed us the potential to inspire our youth to pursue meaningful careers right here in Warren," Mr Glen said. "Now, with these new positions, we’re turning inspiration into action."

Applications for both positions close on 23 January 2025. Interested candidates can find more information on the Warren Shire Council website or by contacting the Council office.
