Media Release: Warren Shire Council and Police Unite Against Local Crime - Post Image

Warren Shire Council and NSW Police have met in Warren after a number of recent break-ins, vehicle thefts and other crimes raised concerns in the community.

Warren Shire Mayor Greg Whiteley, Deputy Mayor Sarah Derrett and General Manager Gary Woodman met with Regional Commander Superintendent Tim Chinn, Inspector Robert Bevan and Sergeant Shane Rankin this week to discuss the incidents and how they are being addressed.

Police provided an update on current investigations and measures already underway, as well as further initiatives targeting youth-related offending.

Mayor Greg Whiteley said the recent incidents had been unsettling for residents.

"We’re taking these concerns seriously and working closely with NSW Police to ensure a coordinated response," Mayor Whiteley said.

"This is about working together — Council, Police and the community — to address concerns and keep the Warren Shire community safe,"

He added many of the incidents appeared to be opportunistic.

"We’re reminding residents to take simple precautions to keep their property safe. Lock your cars and secure your homes, even when you are at home," he said.

General Manager Gary Woodman said the meeting was a constructive step to deal with the incidents.

"We’re focused on what’s happening across Warren Shire and making sure the right actions are being taken now and into the future," Mr Woodman said.

The Mayor acknowledged addressing these issues also requires a longer-term focus that includes working with the community to support young people and reduce the risk of offending.

“We’re in this for the long haul,” said Mayor Whiteley.

“These are complex issues that will take time, but we’re committed to working through them with Police and the community to maintain law and order across the Shire.”

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, lock their homes and vehicles and report any information that may assist police to Warren Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Investigations into recent incidents remain ongoing.
