Table tennis a hit in Warren Sculpture Series

21 March 2021

The first in a series of public art sculptures across the Warren Shire has been revealed, and this functional art piece has already been put to the test by both locals and visitors.

Created by local artist Damian Plunkett, the table tennis sculpture marks the beginning of a cultural series that has seen local residents upskill via local workshops to create distinctive pieces to showcase across the shire.

Funded through a Drought Communities Program Round 2 grant and earmarked under the Pathways Structures program, council has allocated close to $30,000 for the development of this series, which is providing employment and upskilling opportunities within the local community.

Warren and District Arts Council President, Jenny Quigley, is proud of how locals are finding new skills and passion through art.

“The sculpture series has been a unique approach to providing support to our community through tough economic times by giving people new skills to celebrate Warren through art,” says Mrs Quigley.

“Damian’s clever table tennis sculpture recognises the popularity of table tennis at Warren Central School and provides a functional piece that encourages interaction and recreational activity.”

For Damian, he discovered a newfound skill and was the first time he had created anything like a table tennis table.

“This is totally different for me. It was one of those things that just comes along so I put my hand up to give it go,” says Mr Plunkett.

“Creating a sculpture that is both functional and has meaning for the community has been really great. Given I had no experience before this, I’m really happy with how it’s turned out.”

The table tennis sculpture is just the beginning of a series of marvellous creations to be revealed across Warren Shire in the coming weeks.

“We have other local residents currently creating sculptures that will soon be revealed along many walkways and other popular community gathering places around Warren,” adds Mrs Quigley.

“In addition to providing new skills for their creators, these are set to become a destination point for both locals and visitors to our community.”

Visit the table tennis sculpture in the Victoria Park Precinct, located behind Victoria Oval and placed adjacent to the outdoor fitness equipment and tennis courts.
