Respected local Elder and tireless volunteer, Junette “Nettie” Slade has been recognised as Warren Shire’s 2026 Citizen of the Year, honoured for her long-standing commitment to supporting children, young people and community organisations across the Shire.

Ms Slade received the award as part of Warren Shire Council’s 2026 Australia Day Awards, which celebrate outstanding community contribution, service and achievement.

Mayor Greg Whiteley said Nettie is known for her generosity, reliability and the way she consistently steps forward to help — often without ever seeking recognition.

“Nettie is one of those people who quietly shows up for others, every single day,” Mayor Whiteley said.

“She’s always ready to help. Whether it’s supporting students, fundraising for community causes, or passing cultural knowledge on to young people. Her service has made a lasting difference to Warren Shire.”

Ms Slade is a long-time member of the Warren Lions Club, regularly volunteering and fundraising, including selling raffle tickets rain, hail or shine. She also volunteers daily with Warraan Widji Arts, supporting children and helping young Aboriginal people connect with culture through dance, music and community learning.

Mayor Whiteley said the Citizen of the Year award sits within a wider program that recognises community contribution across multiple categories.

“Our Australia Day Awards celebrate the people and groups who strengthen Warren Shire through service, leadership and community spirit,” he said.

“Council congratulates all 2026 award recipients and nominees. Every one of them has a story worth celebrating.”

Warren Shire Council also recognised Young Citizen of the Year Charlie Gale for his leadership and commitment to young people through Warraan Widji Arts, along with award recipients across sport, business, community service, youth achievement and event leadership.

A full list of 2026 Australia Day Award recipients is available on Council's website.
