MEET THE TEAM - Susan Balogh - Post Image

As Council's Economic Development and Visitation Manager, Susan is responsible for promoting and facilitating Warren Shire's economic development, visitation and tourism projects.

Boasting an extensive business background and a wealth of knowledge across many varied areas, Susan has quickly become a valuable asset to the Council team.

Let’s hear more about Susan.

How long have you been with Warren Shire Council, and what were your first impressions when you joined the team?

I have now been in the role with Council for six months and time has flown; everyone has been very welcoming and supportive. After seeing my work list and lengthy position description, my first impression was to run!

What’s your favourite part of your job?

I think the work that I know lies ahead will be my favourite part of the job. It will be work that develops from the strategies and plans I am working on now.

What does a usual day look like in your role?

The only thing that comes close to being a ‘usual day’ is that I am flat out each day and go home exhausted.

No two days ever seem to be the same, but my work could include assisting visitors, giving high-level business guidance, participating in Council meetings, working on strategies, designing brochures, and so on.

The only thing that seems to be consistent each day is that I am usually so busy, I forget to have lunch!

What have been some of your biggest achievements at Council thus far?

That is a question best asked of everyone else. I don’t usually celebrate the wins - mostly because I just like to keep moving forward to the next challenge.

Although there’s so much to see and do, what are some of the ‘top spots’ you’d recommend to new visitors to the Shire?

Our visitors want to experience our Shire, rather than just tick off attractions. Mostly, they like to meet and get to know the locals - I had one tourist tell me that you learn a lot about a town by the conversations you overhear in the aisles of the supermarket.

The key is to listen and then point them towards their ideal spots.

What’s your idea of a perfect day?

One where I get to sit still for longer than a couple of minutes.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given, either personally or professionally?

Two pieces of advice, actually:

1. If you don’t intend to give it your all, don’t bother starting at all.

2. Integrity is everything.

What is something people don't know about you?

Most people know that I was a ballet dancer, but only a few know I won an award as Australia’s ‘Wedding Floral Designer of the Year’, or that I taught circus skills for many years. I can ride a unicycle, juggle, and work the Lyra ring!

What do you enjoy most about calling Warren Shire home?

Being called by my name when you go into a shop or business. People here take the time to get to know their customers.
