Councillor Greg Whiteley was elected elected unopposed as the new Mayor of Warren Shire Council on October 10, 2024.

On October 10, 2024, Councillor Greg Whiteley was elected unopposed as the new Mayor of Warren Shire Council, stepping into the role previously held by long-serving Mayor Milton Quigley. Councillor Whiteley, who has been an integral member of the council since 2021, brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to the community.

A resident of Warren since his early twenties, Councillor Whiteley is a dedicated family farmer who has been actively involved in a number of community organisations. Married to Julie, a retired primary school teacher, and a proud father of three, he steps into the role with a background in agriculture and governance, including eight years on the board of Country Rugby New South Wales.

In his opening address to the council, Councillor Whiteley underscored the significance of teamwork and collaboration. “I’m proud to lead a council that prioritises community engagement and works together for the betterment of Warren Shire,” he stated. “Our focus is on building strong relationships, both within our council and with our residents. Just like in rugby, you can’t win without every player on the field pulling together toward a common goal. I’m proud to lead a team of capable leaders dedicated to our community.”

As Mayor, Councillor Whiteley plans to tackle the challenges facing the region head-on, particularly in light of recent economic constraints. He acknowledges that the council will need to “do more with less,” striving for efficiency and sustainability in all operations. “We must prioritise our resources wisely while ensuring we meet the needs of our community,” he added.

Councillor Whiteley aims to build on the recent infrastructure developments in the region. With a keen focus on economic growth, he is committed to fostering local business opportunities and attracting investment to the area. “Warren Shire is a highly productive agricultural region, and we need to advocate for support that reflects our potential,” he said.

Councillor Whiteley will also continue his involvement with various committees, including the Economic Development & Promotions Committee and the Murray Darling Association Region 10. He believes in the power of collaboration, both within the council and with neighbouring communities, to address regional challenges and drive positive change.

“In this role, I aim to be the ‘quiet advocate’ for our community, ensuring our voices are heard and our needs met without the need for loud fist-banging,” he said.

As he steps into the role of Mayor, Councillor Whiteley is excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. “I’m here to listen and make fair decisions for our community. Together, we can build a brighter future for Warren Shire,” he concluded.
