Media Release: Little Good Sorts helping families recycle right

As Warren Shire counts down to its first kerbside recycling collection on Wednesday 7 October, it's time for local kids to get involved and become Little Good Sorts.
Part of Warren Shire Council’s broader community education campaign, Little Good Sorts has been designed to help kids discover what belongs in the yellow-lid bin and share what they learn with their families.
Colouring sheets, sorting activities, word searches and recycling-themed stories bring that learning to life in a fun, hands-on way.
Warren Shire Council’s General Manager Gary Woodman said local kids had an important part to play as kerbside recycling becomes part of everyday life in Warren Shire.
“We want everyone to feel confident about recycling from day one and getting children involved is an important part of that,” Mr Woodman said.
“Kids are naturally curious. They ask questions, they want to know where things go and when they learn something new, they’re usually pretty keen to tell the rest of the family about it.”
“That’s what Little Good Sorts is about. We’re helping them learn good recycling habits from the beginning and giving families an easy way to start those conversations at home before our first collection.”
Local kids and families can discover Little Good Sorts at Warren Shire Library.
Warren Shire Library Manager Erica Kearnes said the Library had curated a range of books to give families different ways to explore the topic together.
“We’ve selected books that work alongside the Little Good Sorts activities and introduce our young readers to recycling in a way that’s easy to understand,” Ms Kearnes said.
Children can choose a book, pick up an activity to complete at the Library or take one home and start discovering what it takes to be a Little Good Sort,” she said.
Ms Kearnes added that local families were showing plenty of curiosity about the new service.
“We’ve already had some great questions from families about what can and can’t be recycled, so we know those important recycling conversations are already happening out in the community,” she said.
There’s even more for Little Good Sorts to discover online.
Families can download individual Little Good Sorts activities or the complete activity pack, alongside lesson plans and additional recycling education resources through The Good Sort Toolkit on Council’s Kerbside Recycling Hub.
Kids can also take a virtual tour of a recycling facility to see what happens after recycling leaves the kerb, or put their knowledge to the test with an interactive recycling game.
And when the inevitable “Can I recycle this?” question comes up, families can check the sticker inside their yellow-lid recycling bin first or turn to Council’s A–Z Recycling Guide online.
Every Good Sort starts small.
