Big break for Nevertire’s Kat Porter to rebuild dreams for The Rural Trader
04 November 2021
Nevertire local, Kat Porter, has won the Buy From The Bush’s (BFTB) Big Break People’s Choice Award, to rebuild previously run-down general store, The Rural Trader, into a vibrant local store, café and community hub.
The Rural Trader founder pitched her way into the hearts of voters, which saw her win $15,000 to help make her dream a reality.
Warren Shire Council General Manager, Gary Woodman, says Kat’s vision to create a space for the community and give locals the opportunity to showcase their skills will be a fantastic contribution to the Shire.
“Kat’s passion, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit to showcase the many talents of our tight-knit community is an invaluable asset to our region and we are thrilled this has been recognised through the BFTB Big Break competition.
“Warren Shire Council and the Shire community congratulates Kat Porter on winning this People’s Choice Award and we commend her on her vision and dedication to enhance life here in Warren Shire,” says Mr Woodman.
The Rural Trader was founded in 2020 with a vision to transform a rundown Nevertire corner store into a community hub, serving food and coffee as well as a boutique store of speciality curated Australian clothes, jewellery, leather goods, lifestyle products and Kat’s own handmade candles.
Kat says her dream sparked from the desire to do something a little different ‘way out west.’
“I want to create a space for the community to use their talents -- from barista, to chef, to events coordinator -- The Rural Trader will help provide more local job opportunities and be a place for people to meet and collaborate,” says Kat.
Kat’s dreams were crushed when a fierce storm in December 2020 caused extensive damage to the structure that was set to become The Rural Trader. The $15,000 BFTB Big Break prize will be a significant contribution to the major renovations that are currently underway to bring the store back to life.
“I’m so incredibly grateful and humbled by the support, not only from our community, but also from people around Australia who believe in me and my idea for The Rural Trader.
“It’s an extremely exciting time for Nevertire and Warren Shire and I can’t wait to open our doors in 2022,” Kat adds.
In between pouring candles, packing orders, renovating and pitching for the BFTB Big Break competition, Kat is also on the family farm helping with the harvest.
“Kat’s community contributions and her love for this part of the world is yet another example of the passion we have within our Shire. It’s stories like these that highlight the best of rural life and attract people to visit our region,” adds Mr Woodman.
